About Agra Fort :

Agra Fort is a UNESCO World heritage site located in Agra The fort was built alongside the Yamuna River and stretches almost 2.5 Km. It consists of a wall built in red sandstone and several buildings inside. The wall has two gates Delhi Gate and Amar Singh Gate. The visitors are allowed to enter only from the Amar Singh gate.

The assimilation of these Hindu, Islamic and Persian styles has given the Agra Fort a distinctive look. After entering through the gate you walk over a ramp and then enter into the great courtyard. On the right hand is situated Diwan-I-Am, a hall that is used for public audiences. Built by Shah Jehan in 1628 , it contains beautiful mosques Nagina Masjid, Mina Masjid and palaces like Khas Mahal, Shish Mahal , Shah Jahani Mahal and Zenana Mina Bazar.

But the beauty of Taj Mahal is also tainted by the gory fact that the hands of some of the master craftsmen were amputated, to ensure that the perfection of the Taj could never be repeated ever again!

Most of the buildings inside the Agra Fort are made up of marble that are beautifully adorned with carvings. To cool off the rooms in these marble pavilions the walls were made hollow and are filled with running water. From the balconies in the pavilions, you have a nice view of the river Yamuna. Mughal emperor Shah Jehan who built the Taj was imprisoned here by his son Auranzeb at the end of his life. It was believed that Shah Jehan was died in Musamman Burj, a tower with a marble balcony that offers the best views of the Taj. The Agra Fort won the Agha Khan Award for architecture in 2004.
